“Charles Laney, a member of the Sundance fire company, is dead, either from a heart attack or being struck by the hose cart. A reorganization of the fire company had taken place – after clearing up the cart young Laney suggested a trial run. After going about a block Laney dropped to the ground and the wheel of the cart struck him just back of the ear.” – Inter-Mountain Globe, Hulett, July 11, 1907

Elizabeth Ann Good Laney born in 1856 in Indiana, daughter of Absolom Thomas & Lucy Ann Good
Her father Absolom was a well known and respected citizen of Nashville, Indiana and a veteran of the civil war – he and Lucy Ann had 9 children – Elizabeth, Willard, & Clem lived in Sundance at the time of their father’s death.
Samuel Willard “Willard” Good was born in Indiana & when but a small boy moved with his parents to the “frontier of Iowa.” At the age of fourteen he left the parental roof, taking up the birden of life for himself, working on farms and the railroad. In 1880, coming to South Dakota, he located at Spearfish for nearly a year, then went on to Central City making mining his occupation for another year, then going to Missouri to spend the winter. He married Melissa Pyles in Missouri in 1883 – they started overland to the Black Hills arriving in Deadwood in June that year. In the fall of 1884 he located the ranch he as since occupied, 2 miles west of Sundance, which was one of the first ranches to be taken up.” He and his wife had 2 children, one of which was Alice Louisa who married Frederick Conrad Schloredt
